Welcome
to Nutmeg Akitas ~ We are Marc and Lonny Cohen, located in
beautiful central Connecticut. |
| . |
We
fell in love with the Akita breed in 1982, when we purchased our
first Akita, Anjin. Although he was not a show
quality dog, his breeder, Mary Echols-Keen, was happy to mentor
us and gave us lots of helpful advice over the years. We
purchased a show quality female the following year, and Redmans
Orange Colored Sky, our Mikki, became a Register of Merit
producer, being the dam of 5 champions, including her daughter,
who was also a Register of Merit producer. |
| . |
We
strive for the perfect American Akita in type, soundness, and
temperament. We do all required health checks, including hip
x-rays and eye certification. We carefully select each parent of
every litter, always with improvement in mind. Through
careful line breeding with judicious outcrosses, we feel we have
set a specific look in our dogs, which has continued from
generation to generation. Selected puppies are kept by
ourselves to show and continue our line with, and the remainder
of the litter are sold to screened companion homes. We
will occasionally sell a promising pup to a qualified show home,
although that is never our reason for doing a specific breeding. |
| . |
Over
the past 20+ years, we have produced many champions, and
multiple Best of Breed winners. One of our bitches was the
first Akita bitch to win an Award of Merit at the Westminster
Kennel Club show. We have expanded our interest into many
club activities, including serving as officers of the Akita Club
of America, Inc., and the Farmington Valley Kennel Club.
Both Marc and myself are also AKC judges. |
